Blue Jays Cruise Past Kansas Christian

FULTON, Mo. - Westminster women's basketball recorded a statement win against nonconference opponent Kansas Christian, 91-59.

Westminster improves to 6-9 with the win.

"I'm impressed with Kansas Christian," said Westminster Head Coach Tracey Braden. "They played with great heart for 40 minutes and shot the three well."

An 8-2 run in the first quarter pushed the Blue Jays to a fast start, leading after the first quarter 17-11.

Westminster continued to extend its lead in the second quarter, recording its first double-digit lead at the 7:25 mark on a laup from Mirrakohl Johnson

A 10-0 run by Westminster put Westminster on top 34-15, sparked by strong transition play from the Blue Jays, who recorded 32 fast break points during the game.

"The team did a good job of running the floor and creating opportunities for easy baskets," said Braden. "This was a nice team win."

After the third quarter, Westminster led 72-48 on top of 15 third-quarter points from Andrea Zalis. Zalis tallied 27 total points in the game.

Zalis went 8-12 from the field, including 5-7 from behind the arc and a perfect 6-6 from the freethrow line. She also grabbed nine rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

"MJ (Johnson) has really increased her aggressiveness to the basket," said Braden.

Johnson added 15 points and seven rebounds.

The Blue Jays return to SLIAC play Saturday with a game at Fontbonne at 1 p.m.
