Blue Jays Fall In Both Games Of Webster Classic  

 

Webster Groves, Mo 11/19/2023- The Westminster College men's basketball team participated in the Webster Classic over the weekend, hosted by Webster Groves University in Webster Groves, Missouri. On Saturday, the Blue Jays took on the Scots of Maryville College (TN), they fell 87-68. On Sunday, the Blue Jays faced off against Willamette University (OR). The Blue Jays would drop that game 109-74 and fall to 0-5 early in the season.  

Game One: vs Maryville (TN) 

The Blue Jays and the Scots faced off in the first game of the Webster Classic on Saturday. Maryville would jump out to a 9-2 lead early in the first half. They would take a 38-22 lead into halftime. The Scots extended their lead and won the game with a final score of 87-68. 

Three freshmen led the Blue Jays in scoring, with Walker Gohring having a game-high 17 points. He would also have 5 rebounds and 4 assists in the game. Jack Fessenden had 14 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal. Aaron Poage had 13 points. He would go 4-9 from the field and 3-7 from behind the three-point arc. Ben Eberlin chipped 9 points, shooting an efficient 4-6 from the field and tied for a team-high in rebounds with 7. 

Game Two: vs Willamette 

Westminster was back in action on Sunday against the Bearcats of Willamette University. Jack Fessenden would knock down a three-pointer to give the Blue Jays an early 3-2 lead. Unfortunately, it would be their only lead of the game as the Bearcats made three straight three-pointers to take an 11-3 lead. They would win the game 109-74. 

Freshman Aaron Poage led the Blue Jays offense with 15 points off the bench. He would go 5-5 from the free-throw line and contributed 3 rebounds. Senior guard Brennan Jeffries had 13 points. He would go 4-8 from the field, 1-1 from three, and went 4-5 from the free throw line. Gavin Hendrix would go 6-7 from the field and scored 12 points. It was announced after the game that Brennan Jeffries would make the all-tournament team. 

Westminster will be back in action on Tuesday, November 21st as they will begin conference play by hosting the Webster University Gorloks. The tip-off is set for 2:00 pm.
