12/16/2024 La Verne, CA- The Westminster men's basketball team put together a strong second-half effort but couldn't overcome a slow start, falling 85-75 to the University of La Verne. The loss drops the Blue Jays to 0-9 on the season.
After trailing 42-24 at halftime, Westminster found their rhythm in the second half, putting up 51 points with improved shooting and increased energy on both offense and defense. Walker Gohring led the Blue Jays' effort with a game-high 21 points, shooting 8-for-18 from the field and adding six rebounds. Jamile Johnson provided a spark off the bench with 14 points on 5-for-6 shooting and grabbed six rebounds to go along with three assists.
Jack Fessenden added 12 points, hitting three three-pointers and dishing out three assists, while Lee Verslues contributed 12 points and a team-high five steals in an impactful performance off the bench. Westminster's reserves combined for 33 points, showcasing their depth and ability to contribute.
The Blue Jays shot 40.9% from the field and were efficient from the free-throw line, converting 15-of-18 attempts (83.3%). Despite the improved second-half performance, early turnovers and missed opportunities in the first half proved too much to overcome. Westminster showed improvement in rebounding, finishing with 38 boards, but couldn't close the gap in the final minutes.
Westminster will look to build on their second-half positives as they prepare to face Caltech on December 17 in Pasadena, California. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00PM CT.
