8/31/2025 Fulton, MO – The Westminster men's soccer team continued its strong start to the 2025 season, earning a 2-1 victory over WashU on Sunday evening in front of the home crowd. The win marks the Blue Jays' second straight to open the year.
The Blue Jays wasted no time making an impact. Lucas Sottile put Westminster ahead 1-0, finding the back of the net to give Westminster early control. Just minutes later, Juan Pico-Vazquez doubled the lead, finishing a pass from Braedon Cairer.
WashU responded in the 42nd minute when they scored to cut the lead to 2-1. From there, it was a defensive battle. The Bears put on pressure with 20 total shots, including 14 on goal, but Westminster's goalkeepers stood tall. Hunter Deeken recorded four saves in the first half and Danny Monroy made six saves to preserve the win.
Despite being outshot 20-4, the Blue Jays capitalized on their chances and held strong defensively to secure the upset.
With the victory, Westminster improves to 2-0 and heads on the road for the first time this season. The Blue Jays will travel to Memphis, Tennessee, to face the University of the Ozarks on Friday, September 5.
