Westminster Football Rallies Falls Short at Lyon

Westminster Football's Rally Falls Short at Lyon

9/28/25 Fulton, MO - Despite a determined comeback effort in the second and third quarters, Westminster football was unable to overcome an early deficit in a 38-24 road loss to Lyon College on Saturday afternoon.

The first quarter proved costly, as Westminster fell behind 21-0 after a quick offensive strike set the tone for the host team. The Blue Jays began chipping away in the second quarter, first getting on the board with a safety just seconds into the period. Quarterback Trey Thomas then connected with Payton Olsson for a 49-yard touchdown strike and later hit Conner Coffey for a 65-yard score in the final minute of the half. Westminster went into the break trailing just 24-17.

Momentum continued to shift after halftime, as Thomas delivered his third touchdown pass of the game, a 24-yard strike to Michael Worthy that tied the contest at 24-24. But Westminster's rally stalled from there, as Lyon answered with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull away.

Thomas finished the day 14-of-19 passing for 264 yards and three touchdowns, posting one of his most efficient outings of the season. Coffey's 65-yard touchdown grab highlighted the receiving corps, while Olsson and Worthy also found the end zone. Keegan Zdybel added 63 yards on three catches, and Gabe Dace contributed six receptions for 53 yards. On the ground, Marquis Williams led the Blue Jays with 45 rushing yards on eight carries. Trace Helsel chipped in 84 all-purpose yards between rushing and receiving.

Defensively, Westminster saw standout performances across the field. Jason Colonius anchored the unit with a team-high 14 total tackles. Jeremiah Belizaire added five tackles with a sack, while Nehemiah Hamilton and Dallas Isham each recorded a pass breakup. Damien Godley also tallied a sack to disrupt Lyon's passing game.

With the loss, Westminster drops to 2-1 on the season. The Blue Jays travel next Saturday, October 4, for a 1 p.m. kickoff against Greenville.
