Fulton, MO– The Blue Jays were back in Fulton to take on conference rival Spalding over the weekend. Spalding entered the series with a strong 6-2 conference record. The Jays came in with a respectable 6-6 record.
Game 1: L, 9-10
Recap:
There was no change in this season-long pattern; Madison Plybon got the start in game one. Spalding did change another pattern of hers, though, roughing up the righty early in her start. The Golden Eagles scored three runs in both the first and second innings. The Jays had their pitcher's back, however, putting a five-spot up in the bottom of the first, capped off by an Ellie Bedsworth grand slam. Spalding continued their offensive prowess, scoring three more in the fourth, and then trading one-run innings with Westminster in the next inning, bringing the Blue Jay deficit to three. The last inning of the game brought a great Westminster rally. With two outs in the inning and two runners on, Taylor Engelmeyer tripled in both runs and brought the tying run only 60 feet away. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Jays got, as Engelmeyer was left stranded, resulting in a 9-10 Blue Jay loss.
Game 2: L, 4-13
Game two of the series brought more of Spalding's early offense. After scoring one in the first inning, the Golden Eagles tallied five in the second inning against righty Peityn Thomas to increase their lead to six. Spalding continued to tack runs on. They scored another in the third inning, chasing Thomas from the game, and scored six more over the following two innings. The Blue Jays were not able to match their opponent's offense, scoring four runs compared to Spalding's 13. Highlighting Westminster's offense were Yadi Montes, who went 3-3, and Morgan Rusley, who went 2-3. The Jays lost this one 4-13.
Following this sweep at the hands of Spalding, Westminster will aim to finish their season on a high note, playing two on May 2 at home against the 7-21 Eureka Red Devils.
