Blue Jays Roll Past Owls; Advance To Tournament Semifinals

5/5/2026 Columbus, MS– The Westminster Blue Jay Softball team entered Tuesday's Quarterfinal matchup against the MUW Owls as the five seed, with MUW the four seed. Westminster finished the season three games behind MUW, in addition to being swept earlier in the year. The Blue Jays were playing as underdogs on Tuesday.

 W, 10-2

The game was tight early, going back and forth over the first four innings. Both teams traded runs in the second and third innings, leaving the score 2-1 in the Owls' favor. In the fourth inning, however, the Blue Jays' offense took over. The bats scored four runs that inning, giving them the lead, three of which came from a bases-clearing Chloe Ferguson double. Starting pitcher Madison Plybon silenced MUW's offense the rest of the way, and with an already steady three-run cushion, the Jays scored five more in the seventh, pushing the lead to eight. MUW had no answer and went down in order in the bottom half of the inning, ending their season and pushing the Jays to the semifinals.

Westminster's offensive explosion brought plenty of history with it. The Jays' ten runs were the most runs they have scored in a playoff game since 1995. And the playoff victory was the softball team's first since 2018. This upset win brings the Blue Jays to a semifinal matchup against Spalding on May 7 in Louisville, Kentucky. Spalding enters the matchup as the two seed following a 12-4 conference record. Westminster will once again be the underdog and is hoping to knock off another conference favorite.
