Blue Jays’ Second-Half Surge Comes Up Just Short

10/12/2025 Fulton, MO – In a game filled with momentum swings and big plays on both sides, Westminster football mounted a spirited second-half comeback but fell just short, 30-27, to Minnesota Morris on Saturday afternoon.

After a quiet first quarter, Minnesota Morris built a 20-7 lead before halftime. The Blue Jays' lone first-half points came in electric fashion when Campton Hicks took a kickoff 85 yards to the house, igniting the Westminster sideline and crowd.

The Blue Jays carried that energy into the third quarter with three unanswered touchdowns to seize control. Keegan Zdybel capped a nine-play drive with a 5-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 20-13. Minutes later, Aidan Szczodroski delivered another spark, fielding a punt and racing 39 yards for a touchdown to tie the game. Westminster then took its first lead of the afternoon when Trace Helsel powered in from eight yards out to make it 27-20 heading into the final quarter.

Minnesota Morris responded with a 14-yard touchdown run early in the fourth to even the score. In the closing moments, the visitors managed a late drive capped by a 19-yard field goal as time expired to escape with the narrow victory.

Quarterback Trey Thomas completed 16 of 20 passes for 168 yards, spreading the ball to seven different receivers. Zdybel led the receiving corps with 56 yards on five catches while also contributing 16 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Helsel added 64 rushing yards and a score, averaging nearly five yards per carry.

Despite the loss, Westminster showed impressive resilience and playmaking ability in all three phases of the game, posting touchdowns on offense, defense, and special teams.

The Blue Jays (2-3) will look to bounce back on the road next Saturday, October 18, when they travel to face Crown (Minn.) at 12 p.m.
